If you’re heading out on a trip, you may need to bring your sunless tanning supplies with you to keep up your bronze glow even on the road. Here are our tips to keep you looking sun-kissed wherever you are:

Flying? Know the rules

According to the Transporation Safety Administration as of this writing, liquids must be in a 3-oz or less container. So either bring your tanning lotion samples or transfer your sunless tanner to a small container.

Put the rest in a ziploc baggie to make it easy to find. You’ll need to bring:

• Q-tips (cotton swabs) or other applicator (remember to bring whatever you use to get your back tan)
• Baby wipes (for easy clean-up without ruining your friends’ guest towels!)
• Gloves (if you use ‘em)
• Exfoliating scrubber

If you won’t have much privacy while you let it dry, make sure to bring a cover-up along. The kind for swimsuits — the terry cloth pull overs or lightweight long shirts — are perfect but your robe will work fine, too.

If you’ll be somewhere where you’ll also be spending time in the sun, make sure to pack your sunscreen, too. Remember, sunless tans don’t protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. You might also consider getting a base tan from your local tanning salon for further protection.

Have an upcoming wedding? Party? High school reunion? And you want to look your best? Of course you’re going to get a great hair cut, buy just the right outfit and if you’re smart, you’re also going to plan your tanning strategy.

Plan for fabulous

There are those lucky few whose good looks happen by accident but most of us could use a boost. We don’t leave it to chance — we spend time on our wardrobe and getting-ready routine and we plan ahead so there are no surprises.

Here’s how mistakes are made: Last minute leaping! You don’t go shopping until the night before the big event and then you can’t find shoes to match your dress. Or you go to the hairdresser the day before and ask her to make you a blonde with honey highlights and you come home a platinum mess — too late to make changes. Or you decide to rev up your tan by spending one day alone with your tanning lotion and reapplying every time it dries. Don’t do it!

If you want to look great you need to give yourself time to get things right. That means planning your wardrobe beforehand, dieting down to the size you want to be (no last minute exercise binge and praying the spanx hold!), getting your hair done with time to spare and slowly but surely getting to your perfect bronze color.

We advise our customers to get the tan ahead of time. At least a month beforehand choose your favorite sunless tanning lotion and ease on in to the color you want to be. Take the time to exfoliate and apply carefully. Give yourself a day or two to get your glow or rev it up a little more with another application.

Remember: Looking great should look effortless but we all work hard to get there!

We recommend that folks do a patch test anytime they’re trying out a new sunless tanner. Just a apply a small amount of tanner on the inside of your arm, follow the directions for how long you leave on or apply, and then check out the results.

This is a good idea for two reasons:

1. It gives you a heads up if the tanning lotion causes an allergic reaction. Even though all tanning lotions work basically the same way, they use different ingredients and scents. If you have sensitive skin, it’s especially important to test new lotions before you use them on your whole body.
2. It lets you know how quickly that particular tanning lotion is going to work for you and what color you’ll get from the results.

The cheapest way — but not the safest — is to just lay out in the sun and hope you don’t burn to a crisp. But I’m assuming you don’t want to do that. I mean, sure, it’s free but it’s also: boring, hard to control, hard on your skin. Plus for women (unless you do it topless and not all neighborhood’s are amenable to that), you’ll end up with annoying tan lines that’ll dictate what you can wear.

Ok, we’re biased and yes we think sunless tanning is the way to go. It’s safer, you can control your color, and it lets you put the tan where you want the tan making tanline fashion disasters a thing of the past.

Now you could head to the drugstore and pick up whatever’s on sale but generally when it comes to any beauty product, you get what you pay for. We know because we’ve tried ‘em. Yes, that’s right — we’re not just workers here, we’re also customers! And we’re cheap or rather budgetarily challenged! That’s why we offer deep discounts on salon quality sunless tanning lotions. I know it’s not nice but I like reading the celebrity gossip blogs. Maybe it’s petty but hearing that even the rich and famous have their bad days makes me feel just a little bit better about my own fashion blunders!

In my daily travels, I ran across this page of Celebrity Fake Tanning Disasters. Oh. My. God. Disaster is right! Don’t people like Christina Aguilera and Zac Efron have mirrors? If you want to avoid their mistakes (and trust me — you do!) then remember these tips for effective application of sunless tanning lotion:

• Make sure you rub the lotion into every bit of skin that shows — that includes your hairline, Christina! You’ll look like you’re wearing a mask if you don’t extend the lotion past your hairline.
• Exfoliate first. (I’m looking at you Ashley Olsen!) If you want a smooth, natural-looking tan, you need to make sure your skin is clean and clear before applying your lotion.
• Pick a color that works for your hair and skin tone. You don’t want to end up matching your dye-job a la Jessica Simpson. If you need help choosing the right sunless tanner, contact us. It’s what we’re here for! (Seriously!)

I love makeup but I don’t like wearing it all of the time. If I’m sticking close to home or just running busy errands, I’d rather go out with just a touch of mascara and maybe some undereye concealer. I like to give my skin a break from the full face I wear during the week. This is one reason it’s really important for me to get the tanner right on my face. Here are my tips for getting a great looking sunless tan on your face:

• Start with a clean slate. Before you apply your sunless tanner, gently exfoliate your face. When I say gentle, I mean it! The skin on your face is more delicate than anywhere else so be kind to it. I like the tips over at Glamourgirlz.com because they’re clear and easy to follow. Regular deep cleaning through exfoliating will give you a beautiful, clean and smooth palette.
• Avoid alpha hydrox (AHA) lotions. Not forever, just before you apply your tanner. If you use AHA lotions just before you tan, your tan will come off your face more quickly. I wait eight hours after tanning before I apply an AHA.

One of the most common questions I get asked is “What makes a tingle tingle?”

Tinglers, if you’re new to the sunless tanning game, a lotions with an extra boost that makes your skin redden and tingle by bringing the blood to the surface of your skin. By increasing your micro-circulation, your skin gets more oxygen, which helps it tan better and more quickly. Serious tanners use them to break through a tanning plateau.

Most tinglers use nicotinates, a derivative of niacin or vitamin B3. By oxygenating your skin, tinglers can actually make it healthier. Celebrities swear by the extra-glow a tingler can give to their complexion and many of them save their best tinglers out before special events when they know they’ll be walking the red carpet.
